I wonder if Fozzy is on the jukebox. Chris Jericho is not like other wrestlers. There is almost no one in history who has managed to reinvent himself like Jericho has over the years and that is one of the most impressive, as well as important, things about his career. Jericho is the inaugural and reigning AEW World Champion and that means he is going to get a lot of microphone time in the company. That was the case this week, when Jericho got in a rather surprising reference.
During this week’s Dynamite, Jericho talked about being pinned by Scorpio Sky during a six man tag a week earlier. After the fall, Jericho had snapped, slamming a chair against the post in a call back to his outbursts in WCW in the late 1990s. As a result, Jericho wanted to apologize but could not bring himself to say the word “sorry”, having Jake Hager say it for him. As it turns out, this was something that had been on Jericho’s mind for a long time.
This is what Jericho had to say. Check out what he can’t manage to get out:
According to Wrestling Observer Radio, Jericho was a long time fan of the show Happy Days and Fonzie in particular. During an episode of the show, Fonzie tried to apologize but could not manage to say anything, just like Jericho. This was something that Jericho had been wanting to do since he saw the show airing as a kid. It is not clear if there was any reason why he waited so long to get the line in.
See if this sounds familiar. Check out an apparently influential moment:
Opinion: In addition to being a wrestling fan, I also love old television so this was a nice little Easter egg to include. That isn’t something I would have expected, but it isn’t that much of a surprise that he would be a fan of Fonzie. He was one of the most iconic television characters of all time and Jericho would have been at a pretty impressionable age at the height of the series. It was a cool little moment and if Jericho wanted to do it so badly, good for him.
