Do you have one more in you? There are big wrestling stars, there are legendary wrestling stars, and then there’s the Rock. In the history of wrestling, there are only a handful of wrestlers on the same level as Rock and when you factor in his star power outside of the wrestling industry, there is a case to be made for Rock being the biggest star in the history of wrestling. Therefore, it would be a huge coup for WWE if he were to get back in the ring. It’s a long shot, but that might be in the cards.
According to PW Mania by way of Bleacher Report, the Rock may be getting back in the ring for a one off match at WrestleMania 35 next year in New Jersey. Rock hasn’t wrestled a match since an impromptu six second match against Erick Rowan at WrestleMania 32 in 2016. At the premiere for his new movie Skyscraper, Rock was asked about such an appearance by WWE’s Cathy Kelly. Here are his comments, with transcription courtesy of Bleacherreport.com:
“I can’t wait to get back to a WWE ring. People always ask me, ‘What’s it like being in a WWE ring?’ I always tell them there’s nothing like it. There’s nothing like inside a WWE ring because there’s a certain live crowd acumen that is second to none. That was always and will always be the best part of my job when it comes to wrestling. Whether I’m wresting a match or just giving a promo. That connection with the audience, there’s nothing like it.”
The main problem with Rock having another match is his movie career, which would have to be put on hold for him to be in ring shape and to have the actual match. His last scheduled match was at WrestleMania 29 against John Cena, where he suffered a legitimate injury that delayed the filming of his movie Hercules. The risk of another such injury makes it a lot more difficult for Rock to get back in the ring.
Blink and you’ll miss it.
Opinion: I’ll file this under believing it once the bell rings, as Rock is just way too big of a deal outside of wrestling to get mixed up in it again. I can imagine him getting back in the ring for a promo and maybe a brawling segment, but having an actual match would seem to be a step too far. It would be a huge deal if it can be done and WWE would be thrilled to give someone that kind of a rub, but I’d be very surprised if it were to happen.
Do you think Rock will get back in the ring? If so, who should he face? Let us know in the comments below.
