Home invasion? Every wrestling company has what they can deem to be their home territory. WCW was the south with Atlanta in particular. ECW was mostly running out of the ECW Arena in Philadelphia. But none of those compare to the WWE in Madison Square Garden, where they have run for over sixty years, most of those completely unopposed. Then things started to change and it’s kind of a big deal.
It took two tries after WWE shut down the first attempt. See how it went before.
In a press release, Ring of Honor has announced that they will be holding a joint show with New Japan in Madison Square Garden on Saturday, April 6, 2019. That would be WrestleMania 35 weekend with the show taking place at the same time as Takeover will be running at the Barclays Center. This is the first non-WWE wrestling event at the venue in decades.
Let’s get the official announcement.
Opinion: While I don’t know how much of a deal it’s going to be in the long term, it’s a cool thing to see happen for any wrestling company. WWE has had a lock on the building for so long now that it’s almost hard to imagine anyone else running it there. This isn’t going to change the landscape or anything, but if they can sell out the building (which they should be able to do), it’s going to look cool and be something that both Ring of Honor and New Japan can brag about for a long time.
