The first of maybe many. Monday Night Raw debuted all the way back in January 1993. Over the years there has been a long list of people doing both commentary and analysis but there has been one constant: every full time commentator has been a man. In the days of the Women’s Revolution, that would seem to be something that is likely to change. Well now, things are indeed changing.
According to ESPN.com, Renee Young will be doing guest commentary on this week’s Monday Night Raw. In a one time role, Young will take the place of Jonathan Coachman, who will be covering another obligation. Young will also be doing commentary on the upcoming Mae Young Classics, which will air either later this month or in September. She will be the first female commentator to call a full episode of Monday Night Raw.
Young can be a bit more serious.
Opinion: Young did commentary back in the early days of NXT’s Full Sail Years and that went quite well. She was the perfect combination of funny, charming, interesting and well read to make the job work very well and I’d be curious to see how well she can do on Monday Night Raw. I know the whole thing is going to be different because she’s on a much more controlled show but it’s cool to see her in the role in the first place.
Do you like the idea of Young on commentary? How well will she be do? Let us know in the comments below.
