Someone has to wear the stripes. One of the biggest questions coming into Stomping Grounds was who Baron Corbin would name as guest referee for his Universal Title match against Seth Rollins. Over the last few weeks, Rollins has attacked anyone who was trying to actually get the job. The question was answered on Sunday and it was a rather smart move.
Lacey Evans was named as Corbin’s guest referee, meaning Rollins was far less likely to hit her with the chair. Throughout the match, Evans cheated on Corbin’s behalf until being neutralized by Rollins’ girlfriend Becky Lynch near the end of the match. Evans has been feuding with Lynch for several weeks now and was defeated by Lynch earlier on in the show. Rollins retained the title with the Stomp.
Maybe this got Lynch angry. Check out part of her match with Evans earlier in the night:
Opinion: This was actually a clever idea, but it didn’t do anything to help fix up the main event. Corbin is still not and interesting villain and I don’t see that changing anytime soon. There are other things that can be done to fix up the story but as long as Corbin is involved, it’s going to be running uphill with an anchor. Hopefully this doesn’t lead to more rematches at Extreme Rules, but I wouldn’t be surprised.
