Gunther won the Intercontinental Title on June 10, 2022 and has held the championship ever since. Once Gunther held the title through Friday, he reached 281 days as champion, surpassing Mr. Perfect’s 280 day reign in 1990-1991. As a result, Gunther has now held the title for the longest amount of time since the Honky Tonk Man, who held the title from June 2, 1987 until August 29, 1988, the all time record 454 days. Gunther also holds the sixth longest reign in the titles history and will move into fifth in less than a week. He is scheduled to defend the title against Sheamus and Drew McIntyre at WrestleMania 39.

Opinion: There is something amazing about seeing a reign that has lasted for so long be approached for the first time in thirty plus years. Gunther is a monster of a champion and it is almost impossible to imagine him losing the title. His reign has elevated the championship in a way that almost no one else has done in years and that is great for everyone involved.
