Change Of Plans: WWE Originally Had Rather Different Plans For Roman Reigns At The Royal Rumble

They had plans. We are less than a month away from the Royal Rumble and that means the show is going to be in its usual complicated place. The show is unique in that it has sixty spots taken up by two matches, leaving more than a few holes to be filled by a rather small group of options. One of those spots has been filled, but not in the way that was originally planned.

Last week on SmackDown, the Bloodline interfered in a three way match between AJ Styles, LA Knight and Randy Orton for the right to face Roman Reigns for the WWE Universal Title at the Royal Rumble. As a result, the three of them will all face Reigns in the title match. According to Wrestling Observer Radio, the original plan was for Orton to get the shot but WWE did not want Orton losing to Reigns so soon. Orton vs. Reigns will likely take place in the future.

Opinion: This is the kind of thing that happens every so often and it makes sense for the long game. At the same time, there is some more drama over the idea of Reigns having to face three challengers at once instead of someone one on one. Hopefully the match winds up going well, as Reigns vs. Orton should be a great showdown when they get the chance to make it happen.
