She really is good at being bad. There are very few success stories that can rival Alexa Bliss’ rise to the top in the last year and a half. She’s gone from evil mastermind in NXT to one of the best villains WWE’s women’s division has seen in a long time. Without the best set of in-ring skills, Bliss has become a heck of a character who can deliver every time she’s on screen.

In a new interview on ESPN.com, Bliss talked about how she figured out the character she plays and some of her path towards where she is today. Also included is a discussion of her character’s development over the years and where she comes up with a lot of the things she does in the ring. Here are some highlights:

On the Inspiration for Her Fits

“So I was at the airport and this little kid would not go through security and just threw a fit in the middle of the floor and did the whole thing with shaking his legs and arms. His parents were just standing there looking like, ‘We don’t know what to do!’ They were annoyed, and I was like, ‘Man, that’s a really bratty thing to do and I’m going to do it.'”

On Realizing She Needed to Change

“When I first joined with Murphy, I had to make a character change. I wasn’t confident in myself about that at all, but I remember my mom telling me that once something clicks with me … I had to … come in and kick the door down and let everyone know who I am.”

And on What Inspired Her Character

“When it comes to the Alexa Bliss character, everyone says the character has to be an extension of yourself turned up. But I feel like I am the complete opposite of Alexa Bliss. When I came up with the Alexa Bliss character, I wanted to be the girl that everyone knew. There was always that girl in high school who was mean to everybody. She was mean and rude but everyone still voted for her to be homecoming queen. That girl. And I wanted to portray that girl. Because I knew that girl in high school. I knew girls like that.”

Opinion: I know Bliss might not be the best in-ring performer but she’s got a great handle on the heel mannerisms, which is far more important. She’s flat out not going to be able to keep up with people like Charlotte in the ring so get better at something else and master that, which isn’t something someone else is going to be able to do as well.
