WWE has confirmed via their official website following SmackDown Live that Randy Orton will challenge the new WWE United States Champion in Jinder Mahal at the upcoming Backlash pay-per-view.

It was just a few nights ago when Mahal bested Orton, Bobby Roode and Rusev at WrestleMania 34 in a fatal four-way match to capture the Championship.

Last year at Backlash, Mahal surprised the world when he defeated Orton to become WWE Champion. He held that title up until the week before Survivor Series 2017 when he lost the Championship to AJ Styles.

Orton defeated Roode to capture the Championship back at Fastlane, where he became a Grand Slam Champion, something Seth Rollins just accomplished after winning the Intercontinental Championship at WrestleMania 34.

Backlash will be live on May 6, only on the WWE Network. It will follow the Greatest Royal Rumble show, meaning some of the matches, including this, are subject to change.
