WrestleMania
“Rowdy” Roddy Piper and “Mr. Wonderful” Paul Orndorff vs. Hulk Hogan and Mr. T
Some would say, even most notably company owner Vince McMahon, that WWE probably would not still be around if it wasn’t for the success of the inaugural WrestleMania event. The combination of pop culture, rock music, and professional wrestling led to WrestleMania becoming a house-hold name.
However, Hogan and Piper facing off against each other in the main event is what brought most butts into the seats at both Madison Square Garden and at the closed-circuit television venues around the nation to watch the first-ever WrestleMania. Yes Mr. T and Orndorff were involved, but it was the overwhelmingly popularity of Hogan as the babyface (good guy) of the program, and the performance of Piper as the company’s greatest heel (bad guy) at the time that drew the fans to the event.
