The Wrestling News Observer reports that it was in fact Bruno Sammartino himself that approached WWE, after refusing previous approaches from WWE. The report states that Sammartino initially expected his offer to be rejected, however after being approved by Triple H, it was finalized by McMahon himself. The report goes on to note that despite this, Sammartino and McMahon are still yet to speak to each other, and all contact between Sammartino and WWE has been via Triple H.

It’s reported that the deal will see Sammartino recieve a fee not far off what a main event level talent would receive for working WrestleMania. Future projects between Sammartino and WWE could see the legend working on DVD projects including a DVD release focusing on his own legendary career.

Sammartino has also gone on record to say thank former WWE neurosurgeon Dr. Joseph Maroon for preventing him from needing a wheelchair after back surgery, and it was Maroon along with Triple H that convinced him WWE had changed how it operates, with special emphasis on the Wellness Policy.
