Former WWE and World Heavyweight Champion Alberto Del Rio, now known as “El Patrón,” recently spoke with WrestleTalk TV about various topics in wrestling and his career. Below are some of the highlights.
On Rey Mysterio and his status as the biggest Mexican wrestling star of all-time:
“There’s nobody bigger than Rey Mysterio. Rey Mysterio’s the biggest superstar who ever came from Mexico. There’s nobody like him. That’s the reason I said. My wife said this: Rey Myserio’s god, and I’m the devil. My wife put me in second place with Rey Mysterio. He’s god down there, he’s an amazing guy, he’s the one who gave me the opportunity to be in WWE, he’s the one who said, ‘you know what, if I’m going to do the job, I would love to do the job for this guy.'”
On what it was like giving up his mask and taking on the new Del Rio character, and alluded to who is really causing problems in WWE:
“We talked about it, they showed me the Del Rio project, they told me what they were going to do and everything, and I was fine with the idea because you know, they showed me everything, they were honest with me. I want to say this, I have no problems or any back comment about Vince McMahon. He’s a gentleman, he always treated me well. Our relationship was always fantastic. It’s just, the new regimen, the ones changing everything. But that’s another story.”
He also discussed how WWE has taken the fun out of wrestling, which was part of the reason he intended to leave once his contract was up:
“The funny part of everything is, the fans sometimes complain about this and about that, but they don’t realize that it’s not our choice. We just follow our orders. We’re soldiers, we don’t control out destiny. Even though I spoke about destiny for f****** years and years. We’re don’t control our destiny. They control our destiny and at this point, they tell you what to say, they tell you what to do, they tell you how to wrestle. It was just not fun anymore. Because I got into this business because it’s fun. Every time you’re there in the ring, you’re having fun. They’re killing that part.”

Clearly a guy who is very passionate about the wrestling industry. A shame things ended the way they did.
