Former WWE Champion and World Heavyweight Champion Alberto Del Rio briefly chatted with The Austin Chronicle to promote WWE events in the area. In the short piece, he mentioned how he has had to continue his family name in the wrestling business.
“It’s a big responsibility to carry on this tradition of wrestling in my family. I had great people showing me, teaching me, and now I’m in the WWE.”
Alongside, he was also approached about his Elimination Chamber match with Batista, one that he lost. The feud started over Twitter, and then carried over to television. And despite Batista being booked as a babyface at the time, Del Rio still received a majority of fan support in the match.
“That night, I was the favorite for all of them,” said Del Rio. That wasn’t the plan for the self-declared “bad guy of the movie. I was doing everything to get a boo from the crowd. I was destroying Batista that night, kicking and punching him, taking him to the limit, but the WWE universe cheers who they like.”
He also mentioned how important it is for him to redefine the image of the “Mexican luchador” and how his size only impresses people.
“When I came to the WWE,” he said, “I remember people saying ‘Alberto is the biggest Mexican we’ve ever seen.'”
