If you’re purely a WWE fan, you might think that you know how silly wrestling can get. After all, there’s the New Day and Santino, there’s the Gobbledy Gooker and the Underfaker. But boy, you have no idea.
Case in point: If you’ve ever browsed Reddit–more specifically, the pro wrestling subreddit, r/SquaredCircle–you are now a champion. An actual wrestling champion.
Okay, here’s the background. An indie promotion called WrestleCircus introduced what they call the Sideshow Championship earlier this year. The belt was to be defended under 24/7 rules, much like WWE’s silliest title, the Hardcore Championship, where a referee could record a submission or pinfall any time, any place.
Previous champs have included Leva Bates (NXT’s Blue Pants) cosplaying as Joey Ryan, Joey Ryan himself, and most recently Chikara mainstay Jervis Cottonbelly. As for how an internet wrestling community became champ? Well, check out the video below.
So now that you’re the WrestleCircus Sideshow Champion, what’s next? You’ll be defending that title, of course! At SXSW (yes, the media festival), you’ll be part of a triple threat including Joey Ryan and Scorpio Sky. Since it’s a triple threat, the subreddit doesn’t have to be part of the decision to lose the title, so all bets are off.
Yes, it’s very silly. It’s also a brilliant marketing move for WrestleCircus, bring in one of the biggest wrestling fan communities as an actual champion, and telling them they’ll be wrestling on the same card as Matt Hardy and Colt Cabana.
