“Why don’t they just turn Roman heel?” That’s been the question on WWE fans’ minds ever since the crowd turned against him two years ago. The Big Dog has been followed by big boos ever since.
But according to Triple H, there’s no need to turn Roman to the dark side. He’s already there–at least for a certain group of fans who are deeply invested in Reigns’ downfall.
“If you believe what you believe,” Triple H told Sports Illustrated, “and you’re saying, ‘How can they not turn him heel? There is 70 percent of the crowd booing him out of the building!’ If that’s your belief, then isn’t he already the biggest heel we have? If 70 percent of that crowd is booing him, then he’s a heel. We’re just presenting him to you in a different way that makes you hate him.”
“The fans who say, ‘I don’t understand why they don’t turn Roman Reigns heel!’ Isn’t he already?”
In fact, Hunter likens the response to that of John Cena, who’s been getting a raucously mixed reaction for years. “I spoke with John in 2004 when I was going to work with him at WrestleMania, and he was a little bothered by the fact he was getting booed. I said to him, ‘Dude, it’s sold out. What do you care? You are the Yankees and the Red Sox in the same game.’ You cannot dictate to people anymore.”
It’s tough to argue with Triple H’s logic, except for the implication that WWE planned for Roman’s divided response. With Roman set to take on the Undertaker at WrestleMania–and with speculation once again setting in that this will be the Deadman’s last match–that division is only going to get deeper.
