There’s one night left to go until WrestleMania, but WWE’s biggest show of the year is for the stars of Raw and SmackDown. Tonight it’s all about NXT, and Takeover: Orlando comes with the promise of excellent matches featuring WWE’s newest superstars. NXT has had a rough go maintaining enthusiasm ever since the draft decimated its roster and its creative team—will this Takeover be what it takes to get the yellow brand back on track?
Shinsuke Nakamura made an unbelievable splash on his debut one year ago, establishing himself as the top star in NXT instantaneously. Since then, he’s become a two-time NXT Champion, and tonight he’s gone after a record third title reign. The defending champion would be none other than Bobby Roode, who injured Nakamura’s knee to capture the title at Takeover: San Antonio. Now Nakamura was set to recapture the title—but with a main roster call-up in the cards, who’d take the championship?
It was essentially a repeat of their previous contest, with Roode targeting Nakamura’s knee to great effect. A Glorious DDT starting from the top turnbuckle ensured that Roode remained champion, taking home the new belt.
