As entertaining as Goldberg’s return has been–shockingly so–some fans still cringe at the idea of a “part-timer” taking so much spotlight. But what if Goldberg wasn’t part-time anymore?
He addressed just such a question when it was posed by CBS Sports.
“If that were to happen,” Goldberg said, “it depends on your definition of full time. If you have the strap, the WWE title, you gotta be on TV to defend it. I guess we’ll cross that bridge if we get there.”
Popular expectation would say that Goldberg and Lesnar would force each others’ elimination in the Royal Rumble, but don’t discount the possibility of Goldberg winning the match and earning a title opportunity at WrestleMania. As of this writing, SkyBets heavily favors Goldberg in the Rumble, giving him 2:1 odds to emerge victorious.
Even if fans might be skeptical of a returning legend taking the spotlight away from current stars, it seems there’s no animosity backstage. “The respect is unbelievable,” Goldberg said. “I feel like an elder statesman. I’m very happy for the business that such good people are in control of it now. It seems like they’re a great group of kids in the locker room. And that’s really nice to see, because in past years, that has not always been the case.”
But naturally, Goldberg is sticking to the script when it comes to his immediate plans. “I’ll knock down whatever they put in front of me,” he said. “I’d like to get the opportunity to wrestle at WrestleMania again, especially since I’ve only had one. But like I said, the Royal Rumble this weekend, that’s what I’m focused on.”
The seeds have certainly been planted for a feud between Universal Champion Kevin Owens and Goldberg, with the current title holder calling Goldberg “the enemy.”
