A look at ProWrestlingTees.com will show you what “Stone Cold” Steve Austin merch WWE wanted pulled from the site. As previously reported, WWE sent a Cease and Desist letter to the online store ordering that some of Austin’s merchandise be taken off the site immediately.
After a short period of time when Austin’s store was down on April 14, it was back in operation on April 15. However, some of the shirts that used to be available for sale are no longer listed.
Two shirts that used to be on the page are no longer there. One, which was a Broken Skull Ranch t-shirt done in the style of the original New World Order logo shirt in WCW, is no longer for sale. Another one, which said, “Austin Era,” featured an image of Austin posing on the turnbuckle with his arms in the air, as he’s did regularly during his time in WWE.
It appears as if WWE did not give permission to use the image of Austin for the “Austin Era” shirt, and they also felt as if the “BSR” shirt did not meet the “fair use” qualifications to be used. “Fair Use” copyright laws exist for people to use material they do not have permission to use, as long as it comments on, criticizes, or parodies that material. This would be why ECW was able to sell and make money off of Blue World Order t-shirts for years without any legal issue. They were a parody of the nWo.
Whether or not these shirts ever return to Austin’s store is yet to be seen, but it appears as if these are the pieces of merchandise WWE targeted in their Cease and Desist letter.
Editor’s Note:
Seems like they are just LOOKING for reasons to mess with people nowadays. This guy helped save WWF and bring the ratings in the Monday Night War around for the company, yet they’re trying to get him to stop selling merch with his picture on it because he didn’t take the picture? Ridiculous.
