An open letter has been issued to Michael Sam in hopes that he will make an appearance during the Sept. 8 edition of “Monday Night Raw.” WWE’s invitation to Sam was made public during the Sept. 1 edition of the flagship WWE program, and was followed by an open letter that quickly hit WWE.com.
Sam was the first openly homosexual man to ever be drafted into the NFL. He had a successful collegiate career at the University of Missouri, and was drafted by the St. Louis Rams prior to the 2014 season. During the final cut day for the NFL on Aug. 29, Sam was reportedly let go by the Rams, just like a number of other rookies across the league, such as Tajh Boyd and Connor Shaw.
However, Sam is an openly gay man, which many feel is why he was cut. While the controversy exists in some people’s eyes, in others his sexuality has nothing to do with his ability to play ball, and just like the other players that had great college careers and were cut on Aug. 29, like those mentioned earlier, Sam just didn’t have what the team was looking for.
WWE recognizes that Sam has been receiving a lot of press lately, and when being pitted against the season premier of “Monday Night Football,” the reigning king of Sports Entertainment is trying to play a trump card in order to garner whatever ratings that they can.
Not only has the company promoted PPV-quality matches for the Sept. 8 edition of “Monday Night Raw” in hopes to save their ratings against the NFL’s flagship show, but they’ve also promoted a “likely” appearance from Sam, which has not been confirmed. Stephanie McMahon, Chief Brand Officer of World Wrestling Entertainment, penned this in the open letter to Sam,
“Exhibiting class and dignity rarely shown in professional sports, Michael Sam, WWE invites you to next Monday’s Raw to speak of your struggles to succeed, lessons you have learned along the way, the courage it takes to be yourself and the prospects of your continued journey.
You are a role model, who, by example, can encourage everyone to stand up and openly be themselves.
Signed,
Stephanie McMahon
CBO, WWE”
Will Sam appear on “Monday Night Raw” on Sept. 8? I guess we’ll have to wait and see.
Editor’s Note:
Publicity stunt that REEKS of desperation. This whole thing is ridiculous. Have Darren Young host a new “talk show” segment where he interviews Sam then. If Young were to have his own “talk show” segment, what would you name it? Let me know in the comments section below.
