Jushin Liger Working for WWE is Reportedly a Political Move Against Ring of Honor
Dave Meltzer of F4Wonline.com claims that WWE booking of Liger is nothing more than a political move, positioning a legend such as “Thunder” on the card in order to compete with Ring of Honor, who’s also running a show in Brooklyn on the same night. NJPW had already agreed to let superstars be booked on the Ring of Honor card, “Field of Honor,” which will take place in Brooklyn’s MCU Park at the same time as “NXT TakeOver: Brooklyn.”
Many believe WWE getting Liger to appear at the NXT event is a shot at ROH, bringing a more notable Japanese name to their event, in hopes of drawing more eyes and seats on the evening of Aug. 22. ROH and other promotions have been booking shows in cities where WWE have been holding big events such as “SummerSlam” and WrestleMania for some time now, and it looks like Vince McMahon and company have decided to try and compete with them.
Meltzer claims that other political happenings are going down between ROH and NXT currently, but they don’t include NJPW. He writes,
“In what is a major political move, New Japan Pro Wrestling has booked Jushin Liger to appear on 8/22 for WWE on its NXT Brooklyn show, to face Tyler Breeze.
New Japan had already booked Shinsuke Nakamura, Kazuchika Okada and Kushida for ROH that same night, also in Brooklyn.
There are other significant moves being made behind-the-scenes that don’t involve New Japan, regarding NXT and ROH that are likely to become evident in short order.”
It will be interesting to see what comes of these “moves being made behind-the-scenes.” Both Ring of Honor “Field of Honor” and “NXT TakeOver: Brooklyn” happen in New York the night before “SummerSlam” on Aug. 22.
