As previously reported, average attendance at live shows during the month of May declined from about 5,600 in 2015, to about 3,900 in 2016. This is a drop of about 30% in attendance. It should also be noted that there were two separate shows going on during that time, with one being headlined by Dean Ambrose, and one by Roman Reigns.
According to the report, numbers for both the Reigns and Ambrose tour ended up being roughly identical, which indicates the value of the championship has never been less.
To add to this, Dave Meltzer noted the following on last night’s episode of Wrestling Observer Radio:
“Last month the ‘B’ shows with Dean Ambrose, that were often in smaller markets, were drawing just as well as the ‘A’ shows with Roman Reigns. Roman Reigns is drawing really bad. Before he wasn’t, but now he is, so now it’s an issue. Does that mean that it led to this [title change], or is this just another way to get Roman Reigns more over, because that’s been the goal for the last however long? Time will tell.”
