Last night at the 2025 Royal Rumble event, history was made, when Jey Uso outlasted 29 other superstars to earn the right to be in the main event of WrestleMania 41. Needless to say, this came as a complete shock to most wrestling fans, considering the star power that was at the end of the match.
Roman Reigns, CM Punk, Seth Rollins, Drew McIntyre, John Cena, and Sami Zayn were among those who were in the ring at the same time. You could’ve legitimately thought that any of those stars would be the eventual winner of the match.
Everyone wrote off Jey Uso, except Triple H and the creative team, who gave him the victory.
Professional wrestling fans will naturally give this booking mixed reviews (but when don’t they?). But if you consider it, it makes a lot of sense and shows us how to be successful in the WWE.
I’m going to give you my opinion of what WWE is telling us by giving Jey Uso the victory at the 2025 Royal Rumble.
Jey Uso is one of the most, if not the most, over superstars with the fans. Anytime his music hits, the pop is insane, and everyone in the crowd goes nuts. Everyone is pumping their hands and yelling YEET as loud as they can.
This victory reminds me of a promo that Triple H cut with CM Punk over 10 years ago. If you recall, Punk complained about how he was the best in the company but was overlooked because the WWE brass did not like him. Triple H responded by saying that all you have to do is win them over, them being the fans. He said if you do that, the company won’t ask 7-Eleven to put your name on their products, 7-Eleven will call WWE demanding that the popular superstar be a part of their marketing campaign.
Jey Uso winning the 2025 Royal Rumble brings this claim to fruition. Now that Triple H is in charge, he will, for the most part, let the fans dictate who their main event stars are. Jey Uso has won over the crowd and gotten himself over. As a result, he is being pushed to the moon.
And if you think about it, he was a part of one of the greatest storylines of all time in the saga of The Bloodline. Not only was he a part of it, but he was one of the cornerstones of the angle, with his matches, interactions, and eventual feud with Roman Reigns.
Jey Uso has found recent singles success, winning the intercontinental championship in September and then challenging Gunther for the world heavyweight championship at the most recent Saturday Night’s Main Event. He has earned the opportunity to be the face of the company.
This victory is certainly the most controversial move of the Triple H era. This move will also determine how much stock Triple H put in the fan’s reactions. It will also show us just how fickle wrestling fans can be.
The fans have gotten behind Jey Uso. But will they put their money while their mouth is? They clamored for him to be a main event star. But now that he’s getting that chance, will they react? Or will this whole thing be a fad?
Time will tell. However, you cannot deny Jey Uso’s popularity with the WWE universe. And his merchandise sales certainly reflect that. His star power has earned him this opportunity. Let’s see if he makes the most of it.
Because at the end of the day, giving the fans what they say they want, is best for business.
