Upping the stakes. This weekend WWE will present its annual King and Queen of the Ring Tournament finals from Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. While this tournament has held some prestige in the past, winning it has just become more important.

At a press conference earlier today, Triple H announced that the winners of the King and Queen of the Ring tournament will get a world championship opportunity on the brand that they represent at SummerSlam. You can see the announcement below.

Gunther and Lyra Valkyria have already secured their spots in the finals by winning their qualifying matches on Raw this week. The other finalists will be determined this week on Smackdown as Randy Orton will face Tama Tonga and Bianca Belair will face Nia Jax.

Editor’s Opinion:

This is a brilliant idea! The King and Queen of the Ring tournaments used to have prestige in the late 90s, but in the 21st century have only been used for heel characters to seem more egotistical. Adding this element of a championship match creates for more intrigue, and gives the next up-and-coming world champion an opportunity in the spotlight. I love this concept!
