According to the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, a deal is only in place between Goldberg and 2K; not with WWE. However, Vince McMahon did give the OK for the former WCW competitor to be the featured superstar in the game, due in part to the extremely high sales of his DVD that was released back in 2013. This showed McMahon that Goldberg’s name still resonated very highly with fans.
The deal for Goldberg to be a part of a WWE video game has been in the works for several years, with the hold up being with McMahon. When Goldberg left WWE in 2004 after WrestleMania 20, he was not on good terms with McMahon at all. The relationship was so bad that when WWE was in negotiations with UFC announcer Mike Goldberg to be the leader announcer on “Raw,” McMahon wanted him to change his last name for TV.
It has also been rumored that his appearance in the game may lead to a return to the company in some capacity. This has been the case when appearances by Brock Lesnar, The Ultimate Warrior and Sting in previous video games led to their return to the company. It has also been rumored that WWE has been teasing a rematch between Goldberg and Lesnar as well.
In an exclusive interview with WWE.com, Goldberg said that he says 50 matches left in him, so a return to the company is not out of the question.
Editor’s Note:
I personally would love to see Goldberg in WWE for one more match at WrestleMania. While he wasn’t the best wrestler in the world, the importance of him to WCW and the Monday Night Wars cannot be ignored. I don’t think that Lesnar is the right opponent for him though; I just can’t buy the believability that Goldberg could hang with a former UFC champion. I’d much rather see “The Man” face a guy like John Cena or Randy Orton. Either way, a return to the company would certainly be one of the most historic moments in the last 10 years.
