Name changes are common in the world of professional wrestling. More specifically, reducing a character’s name is something that has been seen over the course of the sport’s history.

Characters such as (Bill) Goldberg, Elias (Samson), Big E (Langston), (Antonio) Cesaro and (Adrian) Neville have all had their names shortened for various reasons.

Another change has occurred today as Apollo Crews has had his name changed on WWE.com, and will simply go by “Apollo.”

But what is the reason for the adaptation?

According to a report from Sportskeedathe reason for the change has to do with the recent shootings that occurred in Florida last week. WWE did not want Apollo to have any correlation with Nikolas Cruz, who was the man responsible for killing 17 people at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida.

From the article:

The correspondence from the WWE indicated that the decision to drop Apollo’s surname and only refer to him as Apollo going forward was a decision made straight from the top, with Vince McMahon never wanting to hear the surname again following the recent tragedy.

Apollo is scheduled to team with Nia Jax in the upcoming “Mixed Match Challenge” to take on the team of Bobby Roode and Charlotte Flair. You can see a video of their preparation below:

Editor’s Opinion:

I had to think about this for a moment, but this is a good move by WWE. Anything that they can do to avoid any sort of negative publicity with regards to this awful tragedy will help them in the long run.
