WWE.com recently announced that “SmackDown” will be moving to Thursday nights, beginning Jan. 15 on Syfy.
Because of this change, viewers in Canada will also be getting “SmackDown” on a different night, as well.
Per Patric Laprade of SLAM! Wrestling, the show will be moved to Wednesday nights on Sportsnet 360, one night before Americans are able to see it.
Jennifer Cram, Communications Officer for Sportsnet & NHL Properties at Rogers Communications, confirmed the switch to Laprade.
“Smackdown will be moving to Wednesdays beginning January 14, 2015. Fans will be able to watch it on Sportsnet 360. It will air from 8-10 p.m.”
This change will ultimately result in “SmackDown” and NXT programming going head-to-head.
Per SLAM! Wrestling:
It would also mean that for the Canadian fans getting the WWE Network with Rogers (called WWE Net Pak, which Rogers calls a “sample of the best WWE Network programming”), WWE will be its own competition on Wednesdays. While nothing is confirmed yet, especially the time slot, it is expected that NXT would also be moving to Wednesdays, following the move of Smackdown to Thursdays.
In Canada, both shows would then air the same night, NXT on the WWE Network and Smackdown on Sportsnet 360. One would think that NXT would be at 10 p.m. following Smackdown, but that’s information we don’t know at this time.
Editor’s Note
I’m not an avid viewer of “SmackDown” to begin with, but should I feel the need to sit down and watch it, I like knowing that I’ll be able to get it before a majority of folk in North America. I’m selfish like that.
