The King gimmick for Wade Barrett may be on its last legs.
The 35-year-old British WWE superstar brought back the Bad News Barrett character during a backstage segment taped for this week’s WWE “Main Event.”
Barrett became the 2015 King of the Ring on April 29, defeating R-Truth in the semifinals and Neville in the final match. Since that time, he’s struggled to maintain relevance on weekly programming, getting booked in smaller feuds and pre-shows for pay-per-views.
Barrett even put his “King” title on the line against Truth during the Kick-Off show to WWE “Battleground,” which the former Nexus and Corre leader wound up winning.
During an edition of “Wrestling Observer Radio” last month, Dave Meltzer reported that the name “Wade” was banned from WWE – for whatever reason.
Editor’s Note
Can we say Barrett has “Billy Gunned” the King of the Ring title? Too soon? Either way, ridding himself of the “King” character could do wonders for him. It’s rarely made a difference for a superstar, although Booker T had a decent run with it. Barrett is a talented guy who could do a lot of good in another role. Maybe he could join The Authority? How about that?
