WWE Hall of Famer and former play-by-play man Jim Ross has published his latest blog at jrsbarbq.com.
He discusses the Floyd Mayweather vs. Manny Pacquiao boxing match from May 2, Hulk Hogan’s desire to compete at WrestleMania 32 and Billy Corgan joining TNA Wrestling:
Mayweather vs. Pacquiao
“The Mayweather-Pacquiao fight was under whelming to say the least. The post match press conference, yes I watched it until well after 2 a.m. Oklahoma time, was even more of an unhinged circus with excuses, outlandish statements and fighters endangering their health as in breaking their arms patting themselves on the back. Manny hallucinated that he thought he won the fight while Floyd gave us an update on his bank account. The fight itself was pedestrian to say the least and never truly created any fire or passion to engage the rich and famous fans there to be seen and obviously not to be heard. Legit fight fans were priced out of the equation but provided TMZ, Entertainment Tonight, etc with plenty of footage and sound bytes to last a week or more.
This fight was an enormous success in the hype department and obviously a financial bonanza for all involved one has to believe. However, millions were left on the ground by having the fight in the MGM Grand Hotel in Vegas instead of a domed stadium where 100,000 fans would likely have attended. No great promoter ever leaves money behind and millions were left behind by having this fight at a hotel and not a stadium.
I can’t see any reason for a rematch as it will be hard to promote after what we saw Saturday night and the styles of the two fighters, at this stage of their careers, doesn’t make for an exciting bout. Floyd’s domestic battery issues that were called into question made him the overwhelming ‘heel’ in the equation which will be his role until he hangs up his gloves allegedly after September. Nonetheless, many fans will pay to see the villain get vanquished just as they did Mohammed Ali back in the day and countless, pro wrestling bad guys over the years, as well.”
“Read where Hulk Hogan said that he was going to wrestle at WM32 in Arlington, Texas. Don’t know if that’s wishful thinking or something that has been internally confirmed. If Hogan is going to have ‘one more match,” WM32 would be the place to do it. It would be a nice, nostalgic, special attraction type of bout that I’m sure many fans would be curious to see.”
“Curious to see how my friend Billy Corgan can creatively impact TNA Impact Wrestling. @Billy is a creative genius in the field of music but is a devout student ot the business of pro wresting. I wish him well. TNA still has the same, primary issue and that is getting their older fans and their new fans to find Destination America on their TV.”
