So WWE’s answer to “Monday Night Football” returning to television is an open invitation for Michael Sam to appear on their programming?
Give me a break.
Sam, the first openly gay player to be drafted by an NFL team, was cut by the St. Louis Rams on Aug. 31 after being selected with the 249th pick in the 2014 NFL draft. Rams coach Jeff Fisher had nothing but kind words to say about his former player.
“There’s no challenge with respect to Mike Sam. He’s not about drawing attention to himself. He kept his head down and worked and you can’t ask anything more out of any player for that matter.” (per ESPN.com)
Sam may not be interested in drawing attention to himself, but WWE is. They’re offering the 24-year-old an open forum to express any grievances he may have on the Sept. 8 edition of “Monday Night Raw.”
What grievances does he have to air? He was cut from a team that saw no use for his abilities. That’s the nature of sports. I’m sure he understands that.
WWE is merely jumping on the publicity bandwagon and attempting to get some sort of gain from Sam’s story.
Now the odds of Sam actually appearing on “Raw” are slim to none, but the fact that the invitation is out there and WWE is promoting it just makes me want to bang my head against the wall.
After enduring hours and hours of mediocre WWE content over the past few months, my head has been through quite the ordeal. I should really invest in a helmet.
Being the first [open] homosexual NFL player is obviously a big deal, but if we want to treat everyone as equals, we need to focus less of our attention on who guys like Sam are attracted to and more on there skills as professional athletes.
Sam should get no special treatment because of his sexual orientation, yet we’re willingly giving it to him anyways. Coming out to the world is a respectable act, but it stops there.
WWE isn’t helping matters with their open invitation. They’re throwing every idea they have at a wall and seeing what sticks.
This won’t. Trust me.
I wonder if TNA president Dixie Carter is a secret consultant for World Wrestling Entertainment. This has her fingerprints all over it.
Will WWE invite the hacker who got into the ICloud accounts of Jennifer Lawrence, Kate Upton and several other celebrities to “Raw” the following week?
