In a recent interview with the team at WrestletalkTV in England, former WWE superstar Alberto Del Rio (now known as El Patrón) confirmed that he’ll be joining Lucha Underground in 2015.

Del Rio was fired from World Wrestling Entertainment on Aug. 7 due to “unprofessional conduct” after slapping social media worker Cody Barbierri after he made a racist joke.

He went in-depth in the aforementioned interview about the incident and how WWE handled the situation.

The original punishment was three weeks without salary, but that all changed when Barbierri threatened to sue. Management had no choice but to let their former World Champion go.

Barbierri is no longer with the company.

In an interview he did with Fighting Spirit Magazine, Del Rio noted how racist jokes with executives in the company “were a constant.”

He was never able to stand up for himself due to the hierarchy, although he did so with Barbierri because he was merely a member of the Social Media team.

Editor’s Note

All signs were pointing towards Del Rio joining the promotion, but it’s nice to hear the news straight from the horse’s mouth. Nice get for Lucha Underground as they look to leave a mark on the American wrestling market.
