According to a report by PWInsider.com, WWE World Heavyweight Champion Daniel Bryan is suffering from a neck injury that will require surgery.
The report notes that Bryan will need to take several weeks off and could miss “WWE Payback” on June 1.
A ‘Buried Alive’ match between Bryan and Kane was being discussed for the special event, but those plans could be scrapped if the injury warrants prolonged time off.
He’ll likely need a minimally-intrusive surgery to repair the damage.
The best-case scenario is Bryan returning in time to compete at “WWE Payback,” but the worst-case would have him returning at “WWE Money in the Bank” on June 29.
Bryan has reportedly been very quiet backstage at “RAW” tonight.
We’ll be sure to update you with more details as this story continues to develop.
Editor’s Note
If this story is indeed true, what horrible timing it is. If Bryan needs to take a month or two off, WWE may strip him of his newly-won championship. Here’s hoping the injury isn’t too serious so Bryan can return to action as soon as humanly possible.
