Since 1988, the Royal Rumble event has built into once of the most anticipated WWE pay-per-views of the year. While there are typically only a few names who are expected to win each year, fans look forward to what name can pop up in the match as a surprise entrant.
Over the years, superstars such as Chris Jericho, “Diamond” Dallas Page, Booker T, Kevin Nash, Curt Hennig, The Godfather, and RVD have all appeared unexpectedly in the 30-man elimination match. Jericho received a thunderous ovation when he was the No. 2 entrant in 2013.
Then-color commentator Matt Striker even marked out when Booker T appeared as a surprise entrant, as you can see below.
It appears to be another name who would like to be included in that list. Surprisingly, UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Daniel Cormier told Sports Illustrated, via CBS Sports, his desire to compete in the match, which will be occurring around the same time as his title bout against Volkan Oezdemir at UFC 220.
“I wish I could be in the Royal Rumble this year,” said Cormier. “I don’t think they will invite me, but fighting against Oezdemir in Boston works for me time wise. My fight is in January, which opens up WrestleMania for me [in] New Orleans; not to compete, but to go.”
As far as his pick to win the whole thing? Cormier is going with Roman Reigns.
