On Tuesday, May 27, WWE taped the May 31 edition of “Smackdown,” the last show to air prior to the “Payback” event. During the program, a singles match was confirmed for the event.
Big E vs. Rusev was officially added to the “Payback” match card. Before this week’s WWE programming, the match was rumored.
During this week’s “Monday Night Raw,” both Rusev and Big E clashed, as Big E defended America on Memorial Day. After Rusev squashed Zack Ryder, who carried the American flag, in a singles match, Big E came out to make the save.
Then, on “Smackdown,” the feud was progressed more, leading to the announcement of the match.

For Rusev, the match at “Payback” will be his third appearance on a WWE pay-per-view. He was part of the 30-man Royal Rumble earlier in the year. After being left off the WrestleMania XXX card, Rusev did get time at “Extreme Rules,” defeating Xavier Woods and R-Truth in a handicap match. Now, Rusev will have his first singles match on a pay-per-view.
