On Friday, Oct. 17, 2014, WWE hosted a live event at the Bell Centre in Montreal, Quebec, the hometown of NXT star Sami Zayn. The man who was well-known as El Generico on the independent circuit had a huge role at the event, not only because of it being in his hometown, but also because Zayn is one of the most touted prospects in NXT.
At the event, Sami Zayn began by facing NXT Champion Adrian Neville. While he lost, Zayn would shine in defeat, putting on a tremendous match. Even further, the Montreal crowd was entirely on Zayn’s side, chanting “Ole,” in addition to booing Neville the entire time. WWE even gave time to Zayn on the stick, as he was able to cut a promo to his endearing fans.
Though, that would not be Zayn’s shining moment that night. Following the main event match of the night, Zayn made a run in, in order to join forces with the babyfaces. The babyfaces and heels of the match were intertwined in a huge brawl, before Zayn appeared. Upon his entrance, Zayn was able to clear the ring, as the event closed with Zayn’s music and massive “Ole” chants from his hometown crowd.
According to PWInsider, Zayn’s role at the live event bodes very well for him. Many within WWE believe WWE officials are very high on Zayn due to him closing the live event. The WWE locker room also sees it as a huge deal because not many WWE Superstars, let alone developmental talents, get to close shows in their hometown. Additionally, within the website’s report, it is noted that Zayn has a lot of support from WWE Hall of Famer and official Pat Patterson.
It is not known when Sami Zayn will make his full-time debut on the main event roster. Zayn is expected to challenge for Adrian Neville’s NXT Championship at the final “NXT Takeover” live WWE Network special in 2014. Some fans believe Zayn will get at least one run with the NXT Championship, prior to his first run in WWE.
Editor’s Note
Awesome. I cannot wait for Sami Zayn to hit the main roster. He’s going to be a star.
