The United States Championship was arguably the most important title in WWE last year. Between Rusev, John Cena, the latter’s feud with Kevin Owens, and the US Open Challenge, it was a title that achieved a level of prestige it hadn’t reached in decades.
However, the moment Alberto Del Rio took it from John Cena at “Hell in a Cell” last October, you could feel the momentum peak and end at that moment.
Since then, Del Rio had a lackluster title run at best, and the feud with Kalisto gave us a newer and younger champion in a pretty good feud.
The US title should be exciting right now, but Kalisto is almost being hidden as it’s champion and being put into an “okay” match with Ryback at Wrestlemania with very little build on the Road to Wrestlemania. What exactly is WWE doing here?
At the end of 2015, Kalisto was hot and beginning a very good run. The feud with Del Rio was necessary, and WWE did a great thing by putting the US title on him because Alberto didn’t need it at all.
The problem is that the US title and Kalisto have consistently been barely promoted going into Wrestlemania, which is making both look weaker than they deserve to be.
As a champion, Kalisto has been booked in tag team matches, forced to defend the title during the pre-show, and been given Ryback as an opponent for the biggest show of the year.
Nothing against Ryback, but Kalisto is an agile and fast paced wrestler. For him to be utilized properly, he needs someone to match his pace in the ring. Neville would have been a great challenger. Dolph Ziggler could have been interesting. Even Sin Cara would have worked well.
Kalisto vs. Ryback will be fine, but WWE can do better. Hopefully, WWE allows him to retain and will give him something he can sink his teeth into so he can get over and have a fair shot with the WWE Universe.
Do you think WWE is being unfair to Kalisto and his US title reign?
