Last night on ESPN, their weekly segment on WWE “Off The Top Rope” Mick Foley chatted with The Coach about his career and some of the new topics concerning current WWE heading into Wrestlemania.
The Hardcore Legend did a fantastic job with The Coach expressing some deep thoughts about why pro wrestlers do what they do and what it feels like to connect with wrestling fans in the industry.
You can get a recap of the interview right here. Below are some of the highlights of Foley’s sit down with The Coach.
You’ve never been considered a “finely tuned athlete.” What was it about you that allowed you to be so popular for so long with the fans?
“I wasn’t. (laughs) I wasn’t naturally gifted or finely tuned, but I made the most out of what I was given. I also found a way to connect with the fans in a way that was real. I think that’s the quest for any WWE superstar or anyone who’s had jobs to try to make a difference is connecting with their audience.
I’m really lucky. I’m fifty years old, and I still get to wear a flannel shirt and sweatpants. You’re better off not seeing my footwear (laughs). I’m fortunate.”
What is the most enjoyable part of your post in-ring career?
“It’s just the passion for telling a story and making people feel something. There’s a line in the song that says, “Can you make folks feel what you’re feeling inside?” I thought, “If you can do that in a ring in front of twenty thousand, if you can do it on a page with no expectation of what size the audience might be, or if you can do it on a stage for a couple hundred people. As long as you love creating memories and telling a story, I think you’re fine.””
