NXT is a remarkable thing. I’d argue that there isn’t a more passionate fanbase in wrestling that has a deeper connection to their product than NXT.
What’s especially great about the brand is it doubles as a developmental system for a lot of young talent, but also serves as an alternative brand to Raw or Smackdown.
NXT can bring in talent from all over the world and let them adjust to the WWE style and recreate their image under the WWE banner, which gives them the ability to transfer to the main roster.
Superstars like El Generico, Kevin Steen, Samoa Joe, and Austin Aries can be rebranded and accepted by NXT. That’s probably the greatest thing about the brand, but with NXT’s popularity souring and so much talent coming in, is it time for NXT to expand it’s content?
At NXT Takeover: Dallas, Shinsuke Nakamura is coming. Austin Aries is debuting next week and the rumors continue to swirl about Finn Balor forming a new stable in NXT, which could involved Karl Anderson and Doc Gallows.
The point being that NXT is going to be STACKED with talent. Honestly, too much talent for only one hour of programming. One of the strengths of the product is that it doesn’t have to show the same guys every week. It makes the product feel less cramped.
The problem is how does NXT keep the focus on all this experienced talent when the purpose is to push younger talent and develop them?
Admittedly, there are going to be some guys and girls moving to main roster after Wrestlemania. They’re also going to be game changing talents coming to the main product too, but is that going to be enough to satisfy all the talent left in developmental?
What if WWE developed another hour of content for NXT that was a lot more focused on developing unknown talents that have been homegrown.
No offense to someone like Elias Sampson, but he’s not going to get over after he follows someone like Apollo Crews and then gets followed by Samoa Joe or Sami Zayn.
It wouldn’t be a “brand split”. I’m thinking of it more like focusing on all the talents in a specific way. The emphasis would be to give new talent exposure on the second show and let them develop while more experienced stars do what they do best without potentially burying others.
Do you think NXT should have more content than one hour ever Wednesday?
