That was close. One of the most continuing issues in WWE in recent months has been the contract statuses of various wrestlers. The company has seen multiple contracts come up for renewal and under the new Endeavor ownership, those deals have come much closer to expiring than under the Vince McMahon regime. Now we know even more about how close one of them got.

Earlier this year, Damian Priest announced that he had signed a new multi year contract with WWE. According to Fightful Select, the deal was signed “a couple of months ago”, just before Priest won the World Heavyweight Championship at WrestleMania 40 on April 7. The original deal was set to expire in February and was only days from expiring. There was never any doubt that WWE wanted to keep Priest, with the details only having to be worked out.

Opinion: This is one of the more interesting things that WWE has been doing as of late and I’m not sure I understand why. Endeavor seems happy with allowing wrestlers’ deals to coming very close to expiring instead of getting them locked in for a long time. What matters at the end of the day though is that the deal was signed and Priest will be around, but that might not be the easiest result every time.
