Well, he tried. The rise of AEW has change the way the wrestling world works, as there is now a new, well funded wrestling promotion which can offer wrestlers another place to go. That is more than we have seen in a very long time and it is opening up a variety of new possibilities. We are seeing it again now, as a wrestler is getting more money to stay away from WWE.

According to the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Buddy Matthews has signed a new deal with AEW, which is described as being “very lucrative”. Matthews is said to have tried to give notice to AEW in an effort to leave but AEW is not allowing anyone to leave and return to WWE. This led to the new contract offer, with Matthews agreeing to the deal. There is no word on how long the new deal lasts.

Matthews has done well in AEW. Check out some of his time there:

Opinion: This is why having another promotion like AEW around is a good thing. While Matthews might want to go back to WWE, which makes sense as his wife wrestles there, he is instead getting a big raise to say in AEW. That is something he might not have been able to get elsewhere, so there is at least another option. Hopefully this continues, as it is only going to be more beneficial in the future.
