Backup plan. There are all kinds of things that have to come together to make a wrestler’s time in a company work. This week’s edition of AEW Dynamite ended with the debut of Bobby Lashley, who joined forces with MVP and Shelton Benjamin to lay out Swerve Strickland and Prince Nana. According to Fightful Select, the original plan was for Lashley to debut earlier this month at WrestleDream, but the plans were changed as the show ended with Bryan Danielson being beaten down and attacked. As Strickland is a local favorite just like Danielson, AEW did not want both of them being laid out on the same show. Lashley has been part of AEW since September.
AEW knows debuts. Check out Lashley’s debut and some others from the company:
Opinion: This is the kind of thing that can go a long way for any wrestler, as Lashley came in looking like a star and laid out someone AEW fans recognize as a big deal. I like what they did here and it made the whole thing work rather well, as Lashley is already off on the right foot. Hopefully AEW knows how to follow up on the idea, but it could have been a lot worse.
