Training
Scherr reportedly signed with WWE on May 12, 2013 where he would soon be assigned to the WWE Performance Center which is in Orlando, Florida. This is where he would adopt the ring name Braun Stowman which would later be tweaked when he went to the main roster as Braun Strowman.
His debut was at an NXT live event in Jacksonville, Florida on December 19, 2014. There he would go on to defeat future NXT and Smackdown Tag Team Champion Chad Gable.
He would quickly make his debut on the main roster on June 2, 2015 when he appeared at Main Event for a dark match, defeating a local competitor. As many fans will remember, Scherr also worked as a rosebud for Adam Rose during his Exotic Express gimmick.
Early Career
On the August 24 edition of ‘Raw’ in 2015, Scherr made his debut as Strowman by attacking Dean Ambrose and Roman Reigns. Here he would establish himself as the newest member of the Wyatt Family which also consisted of Luke Harper and Bray Wyatt at the time. His first televised singles match would happen the following week when he defeated Ambrose by disqualification on ‘Raw.’
His first pay-per-view match was at ‘Night of Champions’ on September 20 where he and the rest of the Wyatt Family defeated Ambrose, Reigns and Chris Jericho in a six-man tag team match. They would then defeat The ECW Originals (The Dudley Boyz, Rhyno & Tommy Dreamer) at ‘TLC: Tables, Ladders & Chairs’ on December 13 with Erick Rowan re-joining the family.
Strowman would make his first appearance on the biggest stage of them all at ‘WrestleMania 32’ on April 3 as The Rock and John Cena confronted Wyatt and the rest of the Wyatt family. They would soon be scheduled to face The League of Nations (Alberto Del Rio, Sheamus, Rusev and Wade Barrett) at ‘Payback’ on May 1 but Wyatt suffered a legitimate injury which led to the match being cancelled. In July, The Wyatt Family would begin feuding with WWE Tag Team Champions The New Day where they would defeat them at Battleground on July 24.
Strowman would then begin an undefeated streak as a singles competitor after he was drafted to ‘Raw’ in the 2016 WWE Draft. The week after the draft, Strowman would debut a slightly modified appearance. He began an undefeated streak, first targeting jobbers but asking for more competition.
Strowman participated in the traditional ‘Survivor Series’ 5-on-5 elimination match on November 20. He eliminated Ambrose before being the first man eliminated due to a count out from James Ellsworth’s interference. His team (‘Raw’) would ultimately lose that match.
After a long feud with Sami Zayn, ‘Raw’ General Manager Mick Foley announced that Strowman and Zayn would meet at the ‘Roadblock: End of the Line’ PPV on December 18 with a ten-minute time limit. The goal was for Zayn to see if he could last ten minutes with Strowman and he did exactly that. Strowman would carry out a range of attacks on other competitors during ‘Raw’ the following night until he was given another match with Zayn. He defeated Zayn in a Last Man Standing match on the January 2, 2017 edition of ‘Raw.’
During the WWE Universal Championship match between Kevin Owens and Roman Reigns at the 2017 Royal Rumble on January 29, Strowman interfered to help Owens retain the Championship. During the same night Strowman would participate in the Royal Rumble and eliminate seven competitors before Baron Corbin eliminated him.
After proving to ‘Raw’ General Manager Mick Foley that Owens promised him a shot at the WWE Universal Championship, Strowman faced Owens for the title on the January 30 episode. Reigns would interfere to cause a disqualification, thus igniting the feud between them.
Strowman and Reigns met at ‘Fastlane’ on March 5, where Reigns would be victorious, putting an end to the undefeated streak with his first pinfall loss. This came after Strowman manhandled Reigns on the February 27 episode of ‘Raw’ by sending him into a set of turnbuckles, causing the ring to break during their contract signing.
During ‘Raw’ on March 6, Strowman attempted to challenge Reigns to a rematch only for The Undertaker to show up. Strowman would attack Reigns the week later as he left the ring following a heated conversation with WWE Hall of Famer Shawn Michaels about facing The Undertaker. They faced on the March 20 edition of ‘Raw’ which ended in a no-contest after The Undertaker appeared and attacked both men. At ‘WrestleMania 33’ on April 2 Strowman competed in the 2017 Andre the Giant memorial battle royal but failed to win. The night after on ‘Raw,’ Strowman issued a future challenge to Universal Champion Brock Lesnar for the Championship.
On the April 10 edition of ‘Raw,’ Strowman would attack Reigns in the backstage area, overturning an ambulance with Reigns inside. The following week, Strowman caused the ring to collapse during a match against The Big Show after attacking several other superstars throughout the night. He faced Kalisto in a dumpster on the April 21 ‘Raw’ where he lost, but attacked Kalisto viciously afterwards, trapping him in the dumpster and throwing him off the stage. At the ‘Payback’ PPV on April 30, Strowman would get his revenge on Reigns, defeating him.
It was reported after the May 8 edition of ‘Raw’ that Strowman had suffered a legitimate shattered elbow and would be sidelined for roughly six months. However, he made his surprise return on the June 19 show and attacked Reigns to set up an ambulance match at ‘Great Balls of Fire.’ At the PPV on July 9, Strowman was victorious but was locked inside the ambulance by Reigns, who drove it backwards into a production truck. Strowman was seen walking away of his own free will afterwards, though bleeding.
Strowman would cost Reigns a number one contender’s match against Samoa Joe where the winner was to face Lesnar at ‘SummerSlam’ for the Universal Championship. On the July 24 edition of ‘Raw,’ it was announced that Strowman, Reigns and Joe would face Lesnar at the PPV in a fatal four way match. In the lead up to the match, Strowman managed to defeat Reigns on the August 7 episode with assistance from Joe in a last man standing match. Lesnar would then retain the Championship by pinning Reigns at ‘SummerSlam’ on August 20.
Strowman attacked Lesnar the night after ‘SummerSlam,’ where it was announced the two would meet at ‘No Mercy’ for the Universal Championship. At the event on September 24, Lesnar was victorious. Strowman has been on a rampage since.
Before coming to WWE, Scherr earned his Strongman Corporation Professional Card by winning the NAS US Amateur National Championships on November 5 in 2011. He would then win the 2012 Arnold Amateur Strongman Championships. He earned an invite to the 2013 Arnold Strongman Classic. He finished in fifth place in the SCL North American Championships in 2012 and seventh place in the Giants Live Poland event in the same year.
Strowman has starred in Three Count, where he played a strongman. This was released in 2016. He was on The World’s Strongest man, featured in Season 25, Episode 5, released in 2012.
His father Rick Scherr is regarded by many to be one of the best slow pitch softball players. He had the nickname ‘Crusher’ and is to this day the USSSA All Time World Series leader in home runs at 101, hits at 166 and RBIs at 202. He was inducted into the USSSA Hall of Fame in 1994.
