Alberto El Patrón has had himself quite the year since splitting ways with WWE following an alleged racially-charged incident with an employee backstage. Patrón has dominated the independent scene while maintaining a television presence, appearing for Ring Of Honor and Lucha Underground.
However, perhaps many were unaware just how well he is doing with Lucha Underground.
In the newest edition of The Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Dave Meltzer details Patrón’s contract situation with the promotion. It is said he is guaranteed to make at least $500,000 per year, while he is allowed to still work other dates elsewhere and make money off autograph signings and merchandising. This is by far the largest contract in all of Lucha Underground, where most of the talent are reportedly signed to long-term, lower-pay deals.
In addition, Meltzer notes Patrón had recent discussions with UFC about making a jump to the world of MMA. While Patrón says he was offered a substantial contract, Meltzer says that is not the impression he received while talking to UFC officials. It is said while UFC did have interest in him, it was not a significant enough of an amount to warrant extending a major contract towards him.
The 38-year-old has experience in shoot fighting, but has not stepped in that realm since leaving WWE.
TNA reportedly had major interest in bringing in Patrón to be one of the faces of its programming when it was moving to Destination America. It was reported the company was ready to offer him significant compensation, but it likely would not have rivaled that of what he is receiving between Lucha Underground and Ring Of Honor.
Meltzer notes Patrón still gets offers from multiple companies for his services, but doesn’t foresee an MMA career returning anytime soon.
Editor’s Note
The dude has it made. He can work at his own pace, wherever he wants. Doubt he’ll change much.
