Rey Mysterio has been making himself even more of a name on the independent scene since his official departure from WWE many months ago. Despite the unfortunate incident with El Hijo del Perry Aguayo, Mysterio has been a prominent figure for multiple promotions, including Lucha Underground. He will even make his first appearance for Pro Wrestling Syndicate, the popular east coast promotion, this upcoming August.
But according to a new report, there has been a push made to bring Mysterio into a more recognizable promotion – one run by none other than Dixie Carter.
Per the newest edition of The Wrestling Observer newsletter, Mysterio has been courted heavily by Carter and TNA’s John Gaburick to become a member of the TNA Wrestling roster. The idea, as Dave Meltzer notes, is that Mysterio would be given more exposure on Destination America than he is currently getting with Lucha Underground or anywhere else. While Lucha Underground does have a television deal, it is available to far fewer people than “IMPACT WRESTLING” is.
According to Meltzer, Carter approached Mysterio this past week about making the move, where he would finally fill the void of a Mexican superstar, something TNA has pursued for some time. It at one time thought it would be able to close a deal with Alberto El Patron, though that did not come to fruition. The report states Carter promised she could help leverage Mysterio into new movie and television appearances should he sign with the company, alongside promote strong merchandise sales.
Additionally, it is said Carter told him on his days off, he could work wherever he wanted to on the independent circuit. This would likely mean no television, however.
Meltzer believes Mysterio will ultimately re-sign with Lucha Underground, who will give him more flexibility.
