Last year, Spike made it clear it was done with the world of wrestling after it announced it would not renew “Impact Wrestling” for its programming. Never mind “Impact” was one of its highest-rated shows, Viacom insinuated it would be taking the channel in a new direction.
Ironically, that new direction appears to include one of wrestling’s biggest names.
Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, who called Spike his home while a member of the “Monday Night Raw” roster, was announced as a partner with the station and $7 Productions in order to create new programming that will appeal to both men and women. The Hollywood Reporter gave insight to The Rock’s involvement:
“Johnson and Dany Garcia’s $7 Bucks Productions banner will create and produce programming from live events, specials, sports and initiatives surrounding troops and veterans with a goal of tapping into humanity, touching lives and inspiring and entertaining the audience.”
Wrestling and MMA had initially been cornerstones of Spike programming, but as it attempted to move towards more gender-neutral shows, it figured wrestling did not fit into its plans.
With that said, “Impact” headed towards Destination America, where it has encountered trouble amidst a Friday night time slot. The contract is set for two years.
Several other bits of programming were announced for Spike, which also debuted a new logo. Some of the new shows will include “Lip-Sync Battle” and “Emergency Broadcast.”
