Earlier this month, WWE announced it would be broadcasting its “SummerSlam” pay-per-view live from Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York Aug. 23. The event was moved to the arena after New Jersey’s Izod Center announced it was set to close, as the venue was originally to host the summer’s biggest WWE show.
WWE later capitalized and further announced “Monday Night Raw” will be held at the arena in Brooklyn the following night as well, stamping its dominance on the area for the weekend.
However, it appears one company may have squeaked through the cracks.
PWInsider reports Ring of Honor will be hosting a show at MCU Field, home of minor league baseball’s Brooklyn Cyclones, the night prior to “SummerSlam.” It notes this is no coincidence the company booked the show while WWE is in town.
The move is one sure to get under WWE’s skin, as the company has attempted to block out promotions from running events while it is in town for major shows. For WrestleMania, WWE has roped off nearly the entire Santa Clara, California area just for its own shows (which includes an NXT live event), and other companies will have difficulties running events.
TNA has in the past run shows at MCU Field, and ROH did last year as well.
Editor’s Note
WWE is probably not going to be happy about this at all. Ring of Honor fans are some of the most “brutal” fans out there, and there will surely be some chaos. Also, what if the ROH show goes over better? Many of those fans will surely be in attendance either the next night or at “Monday Night Raw” with some sarcastic sign that may even land itself on WWE television.
