Kurt Angle saw 2015 as one of his last years in the ring, as the 46-year-old has noted in the past retirement is just around the corner. However, it appears the former WWE and TNA World Heavyweight Champion has revealed some sad news that will surely leave the wrestling community concerned for his health.
Multiple reports from the “IMPACT WRESTLING” tapings going on Saturday night in Orlando, Florida indicate Angle cut a promo before the crowd, announcing he will be taking an absence from wrestling. Angle noted he would be required to have surgery on his neck, after doctors discovered a tumor that will need to be removed. He did not note whether the tumor was malignant or benign, or whether he knew of the prognosis at this point in time.
Some were skeptical of the announcement, as following him doing so, Eric Young attacked him, only to have Melendez make the save for Angle. Typically, this would be seen as a worked angle, as it would be a good way to get babyface responses for Melendez.
Angle is known to have neck issues as well. He won the gold medal in wrestling at the 1996 Olympics with an injured neck, and suffered from major neck problems while in WWE. Many believe this to have been one of several reasons for his departure back in 2006, as TNA reportedly allowed him to work a more appropriate schedule for his body and neck.
The former champion is not booked for Sunday’s “Slammiversary” pay-per-view, but will face Ethan Carter III with the TNA World Heavyweight Championship on the line. This match was taped Thursday night in Orlando already. ***HIGHLIGHT TEXT FOR SPOILER*** -> Carter defeated Angle to win the title, which would give reason for Angle to take time off.
Wrestling Rumors noted earlier this week a TNA source confirmed Angle was upset and misled by Jeff Jarrett’s return to TNA Wednesday night, with his children and ex-wife present in the building.
Editor’s Note
This is sad, unfortunate news. Wishing Kurt all the best.
