Earlier this year, it was announced WWE and Tapout have formed a partnership that would see the former issue much of the latter’s gear and accessories to its Superstars and fans. Many had anticipated this as WWE getting paid by Tapout to serve as a sponsor for the company.
However, according to The Wrestling Observer Newsletter, this is not the case.
Per Dave Meltzer, WWE has actually bought an equity stake in the company. WWE now technically owns part of Tapout, which is why the move was made so seamlessly.
Tapout was forced out of its partnership with UFC after the fighting company signed an exclusive deal with Reebok. As Meltzer notes, this threw off a lot in UFC, as now, all fighting apparel must feature the Reebok logo. Many within UFC circles were unhappy with the compensation being offered for the Reebok deal. The primary reason for this is many had their own sponsorships, but now must wear only Reebok in the week leading up to a fight. As Meltzer notes, many fighters were making way more on their own without the deal.
As many may have noticed, the first advertisement for WWE and Tapout’s partnership aired during the WrestleMania 31 broadcast on the WWE Network, and featured several WWE talent working out in the clothing and accessories.
Editor’s Note
That’s sucks about UFC fighters not being able to garner their own deals. Sounds like the NFL.
