David Otunga made a return to the live event circuit and WWE television recently, serving as an analyst on the WWE pre-shows for “Fastlane,” “RAW” and other endeavors. He spoke with the Chicago Tribune about his reappearance in the sports-entertainment world.
He talked his role on the pre-shows, and why it works:
“It kind of fits with what I’ve been doing as a legal analyst on HLN and CNN,” said Otunga over the phone Tuesday. “…It’s great to be back. I was off for a while and missed it greatly. (WWE) is family.”
Otunga noted in the article he moved into a part-time role with the company as a wrestler over the past couple of years, but still did train at the WWE Performance Center in Florida.
“I needed to spend more time with my family and son,” said Otunga, who shares a home with fiancee and Oscar winner Jennifer Hudson and their son David Jr. in the suburbs. “But now I really want to get back in the ring. I hear it 20 times a day from fans: ‘When are you coming back?’ My son is like ‘Dad, I want to see you wrestle again.’ He’s five and now of the age where he and his classmates are big into it.”
Otunga last wrestled on television in last year’s Andre the Giant Memorial Battle Royal at WrestleMania XXX, and hasn’t been seen in the ring on television since. He has a desire to get back in there for his five-year-old son, though:
“He’s anti-Cena,” said Otunga, who has feuded with Cena in storylines. “He always plays with my action figure. Dad doesn’t lose.”
