Sports Illustrated has run a story with potential No. 1 contender to the WWE World Heavyweight Championship Daniel Bryan just ahead of WrestleMania XXX.
The article mentions how Bryan developed three staff infections in 2009, causing him to decide to go vegan.
“My immune system is really weak and the idea was that meats take more energy for my body to process,” he says, “so if you stop eating meat then you have more energy to fight of bacteria.”
It also notes how, while a heel, he often used his vegan lifestyle as a way to draw heat. In real life though, he understands how bodies are different.
“We all have different [considerations]. Everybody has their own deal. Some people are allergic to strawberries, some people can’t have milk,” he says. “To me, we all just have to find what works for us.”
There has been speculation in the past that WWE did not see much in Bryan because of his stature. He was asked whether being a vegan can conflict with the prototypical “muscle man” ideology in the company.
“[Vegan food] is the stuff that makes me feel good,” he says. “Whether it makes me look aesthetically pleasing. I don’t know.”
