They say it’s not about the title itself, but what it represents. That being said? Man, we love cool title belt designs. And when something new is unveiled, we can’t wait to see what shape it takes.
That’s why it’s with great interest that we relay William Regal’s announcement of new title belts to be unveiled at NXT Takeover tonight. Those new titles will be presented to the winners of each championship match.
Ready for your history lesson? The NXT Championship debuted in July 2012, first won by Seth Rollins. British Ambition–the team of Adrian Neville and Oliver Grey–were the inaugural Tag Team Champions in January 2013. And Paige enjoyed the first NXT Women’s Championship reign beginning June 2013.
Tonight, the men’s title will be contested between Shinsuke Nakamura and Bobby Roode. The Women’s Championship will go to either Asuka or Ember Moon, and the Tag Team Championships will go to either the Revival, the Authors of Pain, or #DIY.
WWE’s track record on recent belt designs has been mixed. The new Women’s Championships were great, and the change to the Raw Tag Team Titles was similarly terrific, but the less said about the Universal Championship, the better.
Here’s hoping it’s not just gold on yellow leather. Ugh.
